Scooters law in Lichfield and Burntwood

The safety is very important to us. People riding electric scooters in Lichfield and Burntwood are being warned they could be breaking the law.

Although some parts of Staffordshire and the Midlands are trialling e-scooter hire, police are reminding those living in other areas that the use of such vehicles is restricted.

This includes only being used on private land.

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said

Electric scooters are classified as motor vehicles, because they are intended for use on the roads, and therefore the rules of the public highway apply to all of them.

The law differs for privately owned e-scooters compared to those that can be hired in a trial area.”

Privately-owned e-scooters are illegal to use on public roads, cycle lanes and pavements.

If you ride a privately owned e-scooter in public you face it being seized and you won’t get it back, as well as a £300 fine and six points on your driving licence – if you don’t have a valid provisional or full driving licence you will be fined a further £100 and 3 points.”
